Conversations With Interesting People: StockSense

What:

Students in Penn Engineering departments participate for credit in Senior Design Projects, which can be interdepartmental as well as department-based. As one of the departmental sites puts it, "the two-semester senior design sequence challenges students to bring theory, skills, general knowledge, and inventive energy to bear on substantial engineering problems. There is no 'typical' project and the variety is always surprising: some projects lead to marketable products; some explore a theoretical principle; some are just for fun."

This year, I've been advising four seniors in a project that (like many others) is ambitious but surprisingly successful, aiming to predict stock performance based on automated analysis of recordings of quarterly corporate earnings calls. The students are Ayush Parikh, Beni Shafer-Sull, Gaston Argindegui, and Maxwell Roling, and they'll be talking about their project, about the Senior Design process as a whole, and about anything else that comes up. You'll find some additional information about their project StockSense here.
