Dinner with Rachel Mednick -- Winner of the Philadelphia Fashion Incubator

What:

Come to the South Lounge of McClelland at 7pm on Monday, March 12th to have a conversation with a winner of the Philadelphia Fashion Incubator -- Rachel Mednick. QDOBA will be served for dinner!

Growing up in a home that was filled with creative energy, Rachel Mednick knew from a young age that she wanted to be a fashion designer. It wasn’t until she graduated from college (Drexel University 2009) and had bins of scrap fabric left over that she started to think about how much waste the fashion industry produces. Around this same time, Rachel’s cousin Lucy was born and Rachel started making outfits for her out of the scraps she had left over from school. People loved what Rachel was creating and Rachel realized that this was her way to create change in the industry. Fast forward to Lucy’s little brother, Leo, being born. With the addition of him, she started to create a line of baby boy clothes. Lucy & Leo was born.

Rachel launched her first collection at the Bryant Park Holiday shops in NYC in 2013. In 2017 she launched the Lucy & Leo Project, where she partners with local schools in Philadelphia and New York to teach kids, through sewing, about their immediate impact on the environment and their communities. She helps them design and make stuffed animals and tote bags out of the scrap fabric that would otherwise end up in our landfills, and then donates the finished product to local shelters to help children in need.
