About Ware College House - History

Ware College House encircles the great Lower Quad, with buildings that span a half century of construction. The oldest structure is the quadruple-turreted Tudor Memorial Tower entranceway, designed by Cope and Stewardson and completed in 1900, in time to commemorate Pennsylvanians who perished in the Spanish- American War. The adjacent buildings to the south and east were built during the next few years, but it was only in 1954 that the University completed the south range of the Ware Quadrangle with the construction of Butcher and Speakman (designed by Trautwein and Howard). The breezy eclecticism of the original buildings was now out of fashion, but the simplified style that was adopted respects the older work.
