About Ware College House
Ware is a House that constantly explores new ways to enlighten
its residents. It is buzzing with programs, groups and committees that heighten
the experience of being at Penn. The House sponsors trips to concerts, museums,
performing arts events, amusement parks, shopping excursions and more. The Community
Service Committee of the House Council facilitates tutoring opportunities in West
Philadelphia and volunteering at Childrens' Hospital. Members of the House Council's
Social Committee plan semi-formals, dances, gourmet coffee nights, and a wide
range of activities.
Residents in Ware play hard but they also work hard. The original Ware Book Club
was a small group of bibliophiles who met monthly for dinner at the House Dean
Katherine Lowe's apartment until it became so popular that it evolved into the
residential program Reader's Corner. The Entrepreneurs' Residential Program achieved
its goal of creating a House cafe in fall 2002. The Women in Technology members
participated in writing a grant to the Trustees' Council of Penn Women to support
programs that introduce women to career and research opportunities in science
and technology.
To add to their list of achievements, the Ware staff developed a powerful mentoring
project to help students with introductory courses in computer science, engineering
and physics. This "Penn Mentoring Program" has been so successful it
is now a part of the Wheel Academic Services and is available to any undergraduate
taking the supported courses, which now include chemistry and economics. All of
this success spawned yet another idea— partnering with the Computer Science
faculty to help launch CSE 100, a credit course on technological literacy that
became a House seminar.
